About Downy Serviceberry

Downy Serviceberry is a stunning four-season native tree that offers exceptional beauty and ecological value to the home landscape. In early spring, it is one of the first to bloom, covered in a cloud of delicate, five-petaled white flowers that provide a critical nectar source for early-emerging bees. These are followed by small, delicious red-to-purple berries in early summer that are a favorite of cedar waxwings and other songbirds. The tree's finely-toothed leaves turn brilliant shades of orange and red in the fall, while its smooth, silvery-gray bark provides winter interest. Native to wooded slopes and rocky bluffs of eastern North America, this small tree typically reaches 15 to 40 feet in height. It is highly adaptable, growing well in full sun to partial shade and a variety of well-drained soils. Whether used as a specimen tree or as part of a woodland edge, Downy Serviceberry is a hardy and rewarding choice for any gardener looking to support local wildlife.
