About Purple Giant Hyssop
Purple Giant Hyssop is a commanding presence in the native landscape, offering both architectural beauty and immense benefits for local wildlife. This tall perennial can reach heights of five to six feet, featuring sturdy, branched stems and aromatic, mint-like foliage. From mid-summer into early autumn, it is topped with dense, terminal spikes of soft purple to lavender flowers that are a major draw for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Native to rich thickets, woodland edges, and floodplains, it thrives in a variety of conditions from full sun to partial shade. It prefers moist, well-drained soils but is fairly adaptable once established. Unlike many other mints, it is not overly aggressive, making it a well-behaved addition to a large perennial bed or meadow restoration. Its late-season bloom provides a vital food source when many other plants have finished flowering. For the best impact, plant it in the middle or back of a garden bed where its height and prolific blooms can be fully appreciated.
